BURNING MAN

BURNING MAN RV RENTALS

One of the most hotly-anticipated annual events is the Burning Man celebration in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Travelers from around the world descend upon the playa, enjoying interactive art, music, and community culture with thousands of other participants.

The Black Rock Desert of Nevada

Located in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, the Black Rock Desert consists of alkali flats called “playa”. The playa is the dry remains of the bed of prehistoric Lake Lahontan. It is located approximately 100 miles north of the city of Reno and is part of the northern Nevada portion of the Great Basin geologic formation. Many mountain ranges crisscross the region. The area gets its name from the black conical formation of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, which was used as a landmark by Paiute Indians and settlers crossing the desert on their way to California.

Black Rock Desert is administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

BURNING MAN

Taking place in the period between the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September, Burning Man is an annual event that has gained a worldwide reputation for artistic expression. It is held in “Black Rock City”, a temporary community that is set up for the event in the Black Rock Desert. The event is organized by the non-profit group called the Burning Man Project. It gets its name from the ceremonial burning of a large human effigy at the height of the event.
Burning Man began on Baker Beach in San Francisco in 1986. It quickly outgrew its small venue, necessitating a move out to the desert starting in 1990 to accommodate travelers from around the world. Today, the event draws in over 70,000 participants.

The principles behind the event include:
  • Community cooperation
  • Civic responsibility
  • Radical inclusion
  • Self-reliance
  • Self-expression
  • Participation
  • Gifting
  • Decommodification

Participants, referred to as “Burners”, are expected to band together to operate the temporary city for the duration of the event. For the most part, cash transactions are forbidden; rather, participants exchange goods and services freely and without strings attached. Some infrastructure and commodities are paid for with cash, however, including ice, beverages, tickets to the event, and fuel, sanitation, and shuttle bus services to and from the Desert.
Perhaps the biggest draw to the event is the incredible interactive art. Participants spend the year leading up to the event building elaborate artworks, including motorized sculptures, “art cars”, and the crazy costumes to go along with them. Camping among the artworks and enjoying nighttime activities like musical performances and social interaction makes Burning Man a must-experience event for folks of all ages.
